Born in Harlem... Shaakir's Mother moved he and his brother to Albany, New York after a few murders hit home at the age of 10.
He grew up playing basketball, ping-pong and pool at the Albany Boy's Club, in addition to getting a chance to join the school Elementary band playing the drums. Excelling on the drums, Shaakir's Mother bought him a red - sparkle drum set, but his drum career came to an end when he reached Hackett Jr. High School.
With at least 20 students wanting to play the drums, the music teacher - John Antonio suggested he play the sax and it began. Shaakir practiced & started helping the band director with other students as well. He also decided to learn the horn parts for Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke," with John Antonio eventually writing the charts out for the entire band.
A Master Percussionist, John also suggested a solo for the two of them entitled "Montego," a solo for the Alto Saxophone and Marimba.
After he continued his music studies at Albany High School, where he was put in the concert band - but couldn't deal with the limitations - the music and the teacher. He was then switched over to the music program for 10th-12th graders under the direction of Don Lutzy.
A Jazz Trumpeter / Piano player and graduate of Berklee College of Music, Don taught Shaakir how to hear, think and understand the music and its foundations.
As a freshman, Shaakir formed a Jazz Band - playing the music of Patrice Rushen, The Crusaders & Duke Ellington.
In his sophmore year Shaakir was introduced to George Mastrangelo - a music teacher at Street Academy; the"Alternative" Public School."
A Professional Saxophonist, George took Shaakir under his wings and introduced him to the Saxophone. George's sayin'... " if you can sing it - you can play it..."
Shaakir went on to attend Berklee College of Music with classmates Jeff Sparks, Walter Beasley, Greg Osby, Cyrus Chestnut, Wendell Brooks & Clark Gayton.
After Berklee, Shaakir took a big leap to an HBU in Texas and studied Criminal Justice at Prairie View A&M University, with a minor in music. He started a Jazz band and ironically ended up quitting the Sax for about 15 years.
When he finally returned...he began producing artists - released his fist compilation to include Platinum Artist Lil' Troy - known for "Wanna Be a Balla," Saxophonist / Professor Horace Alexander Young & 13 other artists.
Formally on an International Armed Forces tour which began in October of '2001, his tour has taken his music to more than 50 Military Bases Worldwide.
In '2005, Shaakir was chosen for a New Release tour in Germany & Italy where he visited 12 U.S. Military Bases.
